History:

The Cleveland Women’s Air Derby in 1929, known as the Powder Puff Derby was the world’s first air Derby for female pilots. It took place from 13 to 20 August 1929 and resulted from Santa Monica, California to Cleveland, Ohio. Then the currently established 99 of 117 US American female pilots with ticket established their own organization, the Ninety Nines, whose first president was Amelia Earhart.

As of 1947, the organization held their own derby and the press revived the name Powder Puff Derby again, which was accepted by the Ninety Nines with pride.

1932 Amelia Earhart flew with her red Lockheed Vega 5B as the first woman non-stop across the Atlantic. So she was the second person after Charles Lindbergh, who dared such a flight. It started in Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, Canada and landed 15 hours later after 3260 kilometers in a field near Londonderry, Northern Ireland. With this flight, she caused a sensation and proved she was a courageous woman capable of doing.
