B-29 Superfortress “Joltin’ Josie, The Pacific Pioneer” was the first B-29 to land on Saipan in October 1944. Assigned to 873rd Bomb Squadron, 498th Bomb Group. On 1 April 1945, Joltin’ Josie departed Isley Field for Tokyo, bursting into flames shortly after takeoff. No survivors among the eleven crew on board. 42-24614 was taking part in “Mission 51”: 6 of the 121 B-29’s dispatched from the 73rd BW to attack the Nakajima aircraft plant in Tokyo were lost.
